Listening to the Holy Spirit:
The errand may appear small, insignificant and without honor, but it is the small that serves the greater. Little of earth, little of My creation consists of greatness alone. The grandeur of the cosmos consists first of the smallest of My creation. It is in the obedience of each cell, in the task of each atom, that the whole and magnificence of creation endures. It follows in all of life and in eternity. The small lift the great, invisibly and without accolade. The many tasks of the faithful lift the majesty of My greatest work through them. Without such servanthood, there would be no great kings. Without the quiet diligence and practice of each instrument, no great concert, no moving sound, and no echo of that sound in the human heart. No small service is forgotten. I see all you do and will do. My memory falters not, and great is the reward of the faithful. I tell you clearly, the small hold the great, and great will be the small when esteemed in eternity.
Matt 19:30 (ESV) – But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
John 13:13-14 (ESV) – You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
Zachariah 4:10 (ESV) – For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
Luke 21:3 (ESV) – So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all;
Take it to Work:
In the world we live in, we hate being last. First place is always the place to be, and last place is generally embarrassing. We want to win, and want to win big. We want to show how good we are, how much we can accomplish, and often, we are bothered when we have to pay attention to the smaller, more mundane things in life. “It’s not worth my time” “I’m too busy” “Maybe later when I have more time”. Truth is, we will never have more time than we have right now, just less of it, at least here on this side of eternity.
But while we are here, we naturally want to spend our time wisely, and the more we make per hour, the more valuable we see our time, the less we want to mess with the small stuff of life. Well, as always, God’s view is a bit different, and he reminds us today that the small things are very important to Him, and He forgets none of them. Even if they are seemingly trivial, or unappreciated by those whom we serve, our small contributions, done with the right heart, are held in very high esteem in the eyes of God.
He says the last will be first…I wonder if that is because he loves the servant’s heart, and it is generally the lower classes that serve the upper classes? Just like in His creation, the small creatures support the great, some of those creatures are completely invisible, and so is their lot in life, but they are indispensable to the grandeur of His immense creation. Regardless of your title, position or pay, let Him see you serve in those little ways, He will remember each one, as His Word works through you, today.
