The tongue is a formidable weapon. The word of ones heat can defend as valiant, and destroy as enemy. It is neither good to speak falsehood nor blasphemy, to conjure sharp words, or throw them as daggers. It is also among the sinner who would hold his tongue when speech and truth would save the day; where words of healing are cast away, where the lips hold tight against forgiveness. There is time for the speech of many words, giving exhortation to they who listen, and time for silence among those who accept not wisdom. But it is of discernment that you must obey, for often the word of truth is omitted for embarrassment, and the words of gossip embraced for gain. Guard your mouth carefully, both in silence and in the speaking.

Psalm 39:2 (ESV) – I was mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse.

Proverbs 18:21 (ESV) – Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

1 Peter 3:10 (ESV) – For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;”

Bottom Line:  Sometimes we remain silent when we really should say something, and sometimes we speak when we should have stayed silent. Depending on circumstances and personality, we can find ourselves in regret on either end of the spectrum. The workplace is full of opportunities to either “enter in” or silently “let things go”. Most often we make these decisions based on how we may be perceived, and if we think the timing is right. Many times we miss opportunities for silence, and other times we talk too much. Seek the Holy Spirit’s leading. He will help you to discern the proper balance in your response, or perhaps, your silence. Make use of a simple prayer that has helped many in difficult situations. Whisper in your heart to God, “Please help me here Lord”, and He will be very faithful to do so.
