Taking It to Work:
Personally, sometimes I hesitate to bother my boss with details. I know he is busy, and it seems often I should be able to take care of things myself. It could also be pride, in the fact I want to look competent and not needy. After all, being independent and capable is what brings the raises and promotions right? As much as that may be true in the workplace, it unfortunately can bleed over, and set a very poor example of what our relationship with God should be.
Our God is not our busy boss. Yet, if we approach Him, or not approach Him, with the same logic of when we approach our secular leaders, we may find ourselves approaching Him only with the biggest problems, or only when we have tried it all, and there is no where else to turn. That may work at the workplace, and it may be correct there, but not with a God that wants us to relate to Him as Father, not a boss.
Our God, is one who wants to walk with us, abide with us, and share in the minor ups-and-downs of life. Our God depicts Himself as a loving Father that cares and has infinite time to be with each one of us in the details of our work, our relationships, and our lives. In fact, there is not one instant of time where His full and undivided attention isn’t upon us. Not one detail of our lives slips through His fingers, but if we think we can only give Him a call when the big things are rough, we are treating Him more as a distant boss, not the abiding Father that He truly is.
Look around. All of His incredible creation holds together at a level of detail that even science has not yet come to fully grasp. The details and intricacies of our lives are complex and detailed as well. He invites us, to invite Him, into those smallest details. He is already there, waiting, and is pleased to walk with us, that our work and the whole of our lives would be blessed, in every detail, as His Word works in your life, and mine, today.
Isaiah 43:2 (ESV) – When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
1John 3:1 (ESV) – “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”
Psalm 104:14-15 (ESV) – You cause the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart.
Psalm 37:23 (ESV) – The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His way;
Listening to the Holy Spirit (Rhema):
In all work there is detail. In all creations of man and God there are intricacies that allow function. Without the detail of these workings, all of creation loses function and the intent of their being. You have been given much, but with each day, care must be taken in the detail of life. Haste lays great barriers to detail; detail in which you are called to care. Details of work cannot be ignored, nor of family, nor of relationship with Me. Time must be allotted for each. My day is sufficient, but you must meter. Apportion to the greater first. Look carefully at the function of each, details given to Me in prayer that the function of each will be blessed. Give to Me each detail. Design with me each function of your life given to the Kingdom of God, and the work of your hands will be lifted with strength and wisdom not of your own. I am the God of all detail, and I walk with you.
